The free food store of Vellattu Parambu in Malappuram keeps its door open for the hungry and the needy. Committed to the prophet saying, "He who fills his stomach while his neighbour starves, is no true believer", the Masjid Noor mahal committee came up with the concept of free food with dignity.
The store is open on all days and the provisions needed for a family of five are offered per day per person. Through the opening of the store, 160 neighbourhood families are now food secured.
Regardless of religion, all are welcomed to benefit and contribute to the community store. Contributions to Kalavara can be both in provisions or monetary. The financially sound can also have their pick by volunteering to fund the proportionate amount to the store.
With no security personnel or employees, 'Kalavara' has stored more than 20 basic provisions. There is no billing or telling - complete privacy of the beneficiaries is assured.
The store is systemized on the foundations of dignity, trust and cooperation, says the committee office-bearers; Perinjeri Mohammed Ali, Thayyil Mohammed Ali and Kalliyinthodi Avaraan. They further add that the store is bound to inspire youngsters.
