Love Jihad is an imaginary construction of Sangh Parivar organisations, says Geevarghese Mor Coorilos, the Metropolitan of Niranam Diocese of Malankara Jacobite Syriac Orthodox Church.
Coorilos's remarks came after the statement of Kerala Congress (M) Chairman Jose K Mani, statement that the Love jihad cases in Kerala should be probed and addressed. Kerala Congress is the largest Christian party and in the state and is in alliance with Left Democratic Front (LDF).
Coorilos also urged that the religious minorities shouldn’t fall for this false propaganda of communalism. And that Christian groups can’t get along with Sangh Parivar, he said to MediaOne TV.
Ahead of the election, this propaganda is aiming at communal division of society. This is dangerous to secular Kerala. At a time when the oppressed minorities should stand together, these attempts at dividing them should be checked,” said the Christian cleric.
He went on to say: “It is condemnable that the Left Front has a compromising position towards these. false propagandas most of the time.”
‘Love jihad’ is a term used by the Hindutva to describe an alleged phenomenon where Muslim men lure Hindu women, by hook or by crook, into marrying them and converting to Islam. However, several reports and findings have repeatedly said that Love jihad is nowhere found in practice and courts have approved them.
Following Uttar Pradesh, four other BJP-ruled states – Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Haryana and Assam have also decided to introduce laws aimed at preventing inter-faith marriage.
