England cricketers stand by Moeen Ali, after Taslima Nasrin's ISIS tweet
Moeen Ali's England teammates have stood by him, after Taslima Nasrin's offensive tweet. The Bangladeshi author tweeted, “If Moeen Ali were not stuck with cricket, he would have gone to Syria to join ISIS”.
Moeen Ali is currently in India to play for Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL), starting on Friday. And reports of Ali asking CSK management to remove a sponsor’s logo of an alcohol company’s surrogate product from his team jersey came up a few days ago. However, CSK officials confirmed that no such permission has been sought by the England all-rounder.
Tasleema Nasrin came up with a tweet in her defence, "Haters know very well that my Moeen Ali tweet was sarcastic. But they made that an issue to humiliate me because I try to secularize Muslim society & I oppose Islamic fanaticism. One of the greatest tragedies of humankind is pro-women leftists support anti-women Islamists", which however could not save her as Moeen's teammate Jofra Archer tweeted, “Sarcastic? No one is laughing, not even yourself, the least you can do is delete the tweet”. And Taslima eventually deleted her tweet.
Along with Archer other teammates too backed the all-rounder cricketer. "Can’t believe this. Disgusting tweet. Disgusting individual”, tweeted Lancashire and England fast bowler Saqib Mahmood.
"This is the problem with this app. People being able to say stuff like this. Disgusting. Things need to change, please report this account!” England batsman Ben Duckett tweeted.
Moeen, born in Birmingham in 1987, is a practising Muslim. Moeen's father, hurt and shocked has shared his son's tough journey into England's cricket team and how he had shrugged off Islamophobia back in his country, maintaining his calm and faith. He is certain, this time too Moeen would win over hate.
